DOH1.jpgErin Chapman is currently producing the Recorded In Hollywood musical, which is about the true story about how a brilliant black man, John Dolphin, became a successful record producer, radio show producer, and record store owner in Los Angeles; breaking the color boundary by owning a successful integrated music store, and launching the careers of many famous doo wop and R&B singers in the 1940s and 1950s.  He did all this during the time of intense persecution of negroes by institutionalized racism (during the days of Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Bus Boycotts), and despite oppresive actions by the LAPD.  The book is available on Amazon.com or at
www.recordedinhollywood.com

Written by Matt Donnelly and Jamelle Dolphin, the book for the musical will cover the 1940s Los Angeles music scene, where John Dolphin is larger than life, and people are attracted to that. He is completely in love with his wife and would lay down his life for his children.  His loyalty to his friends Leon, Jesse Belvin, and Sam Cooke goes unmatched.  And Jesse and Sam owe a great deal to John.  John produces and first breaks Jesse’s hits like “Dream Girl” and “Earth Angel.”  John teaches Sam everything he needs to know about the record business and promotes Sam’s records from the store, and Sam reciprocates by advancing John boxes of all of his soon-to-be hits.  Together these talented guys make a lot of money and have a great time along the way.

DOH2.jpgJohn Dolphin is a force.  He opens his record store and calls it Dolphins of Hollywood, and he launches his record label and calls it Recorded In Hollywood — even though, due to sanctions against black business owners, both businesses were based 8 miles away from Hollywood in South Central Los Angeles.  While John’s ability to finesse clients, close deals, and pitch new ideas he was on pace to do all the things Quincy Jones would end up doing years later.  In spite of heavy persecution, death threats and store closures by the Los Angeles Police Department - who were dead set against integration at that time (this was during the days of Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Bus Boycotts).

John Dolphin led the way for guys like Quincy Jones and Barry Gordy.  In fact, Barry’s Motown Records and DOH3.jpgQuincy’s Mercury Records didn’t find success until much later.  John boosted the careers of folks like Sam Cooke, Jesse Belvin, Ike & Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, and Billy Holiday.  Through his record store, his record label, and a phenomenally popular radio show (broadcast right from the store window), John introduced doo-wop and rhythm and blues – “race music” – to white America, and effectively broke the color boundary as scores of white teenagers flocked down to South Central to the store to buy records.  And John Dolphin was positioned to launch the careers of many more of the world’s finest singers and entertainers - but he was murdered in 1957.

Before rock and roll recorded in Memphis,

Before Motown recorded in Detroit,

Rhythm and blues... recorded in Hollywood.

JamelleHeadshot.JPGJamelle Dolphin – Represented by AWS Management,
Jamelle (grandson of John Dolphin), authored the book “Recorded In Hollywood,” published on Amazon in 2011. The book is based on research in historical records, as well as, hundreds of hours of verbal interviews of family and friends -- and records the true life story of Jamelle Dolphin’s grandfather John Dolphin, who was owner of the world famous record store “Dolphins of Hollywood” which began around 1948. Jamelle was inspired to write the book, as a natural outgrowth of hearing the many colorful stories about his grandfather. As Jamelle grew up in Los Angeles, having the last name “Dolphin” always seem to be followed by “are you related to John Dolphin?”  John Dolphin was a successful black  businessman in South Central Los Angeles during the 40s and 50s, owning a record store, radio broadcast, and labels that recorded some of the finest doo-wop and early R&B on the West Coast. Many musicians recorded music on John’s record labels Cash, Money, and Recorded In Hollywood.  Jesse Belvin’s hit song Dream Girl which broke on the Dolphin's of Hollywood radio show).  Jamelle Dolphin holds a B.A. degree in Business Administration Marketing from Sonoma State University, and he currently runs a business/record label: Dolphins of Hollywood Entertainment, in Los Angeles.
